Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Detectors, Safety First! Toronto
CARBON MONOXIDE AND SMOKE DETECTORS
Carbon Monoxide and Smoke detectors do not last forever, and need to be checked regularly, at least once a month, by pressing the Test button, to make sure at least it gets activated.
All smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years. And, depending upon manufacturers, carbon monoxide (CO) alarms need to be replaced every 5-7 years. Even though an alarm may sound when you push the test button or replace the batteries, an out dated alarm does not provide the level of protection you need. Sensors weaken and do not provide the audible alarm when there is carbon monoxide or smoke in the house.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends that, for the best protection, homeowners install one carbon monoxide alarm on every storey in your home.
Have a qualified technician inspect your fuel-burning appliances and chimneys, which we, the HouseDepot can do it as we are both qualified for Gas fuels as well as electrical licenses.
If your CO alarm sounds, immediately operate the reset/silence button and call your fire department or 9-1-1.
Move to fresh air, either outside or to an open window or door. Account for every household member.
Don't re-enter your home or move away from the open door or window until the emergency services have arrived, the home is sufficiently aired out and the CO alarm doesn't reactivate.
If your CO alarm reactivates within a 24 hour period, repeat the steps above and call a qualified technician to examine your appliances and make any appropriate repairs.
Call HouseDepot today for replacement of your old smoke alarms, or for installation of new combination "Smoke/CO Alarms".
where to place the carbon monoxide and smoke detectors:
one in furnace room, one in the common living area, one far away from kitchen so that the cooking smoke does not activate detectors, min one in every floor, one in stair way to exit area
The smoke detectors/carbon monoxide detectors should be interlocked (connected together) such that if one detector sees smoke or carbon monoxide, it can activate all other smoke or carbon monoxide detectors in the house, so everybody in the house knows of the severity of the situation.
since the houses which are already built do not have interlock(connection between the detectors thro wire), the best option is to use the smoke detectors which have wifi conncections such as nest.
Duct Smoke Detectors
They are installed in the mechanical room inside the main duct, and turns off the heating system when there is smoke in the furnace. this is mandatory installation in certain municipalities.
